Chapter Nine

Wren clicked the reserve table now button on her phone and cut and pasted the restaurant info into a text to Lennox. See you at seven thirty, she typed. She stared at the screen for a moment, but when no quick reply materialized, she decided to stow her phone in her bag to keep from checking it compulsively. No sooner had it left her hand than it started buzzing repeatedly. She grabbed it and swiped it open.

Sounds good. See you there.

Wren smiled, relieved Lennox wasn’t the kind of person who felt the need to abbreviate her texts, but kind of wishing she’d added some emojis to indicate she wasn’t being dragged to this dinner against her will. Not that Lennox seemed like the kind of person who did anything against her will. Of course, she didn’t really know anything about her, but hopefully after tonight that would change. She was determined to pry as much information as she could out of Lennox on her mission to find a way to burrow beneath that hard exterior and get her to come around to her way of thinking about Jared Allen’s case.

You know that’s not the only reason you asked her to dinner.

Her inner voice wasn’t wrong. She was attracted to Lennox—who wouldn’t be? But in a curious about the enigmatic, successful, good-looking woman kind of way. She hadn’t been lying when she told Lennox this wasn’t a date. Lennox wasn’t her usual type at all. She was way too buttoned up and inflexible about her beliefs. Wren could never imagine them having a productive conversation because Lennox was too convinced her way was the right way. That might work in a professional setting, but on a date, it was a death knell. Which begged the question of why she’d asked Lennox on a date-like outing to discuss business. She didn’t have the answer, but she did know she was looking forward to it. But there would be no kissing.

Damn, why had that thought and the accompanying flashback to the almost kissing popped into her head just now? Dumb question since she knew the truth—it had been lying there, below the surface for days.

Her phone buzzed again, and she glanced at the screen.

Dinner tonight?

Diane. She set the phone down while she considered her options. They hadn’t seen each other in days, and Wren was a little disturbed to realize she hadn’t missed Diane at all. That and the fact she was thinking about kissing other women—make that one woman in particular—signaled it was time to officially break things off. They hadn’t been together all that long, and they’d never even pretended to be exclusive, but she knew in her heart, that as tempting as it was to thumb out a Dear Jane text, she had to talk to Diane in person. But not right now. She picked up her phone and typed a quick response. Can’t tonight, but we should meet soon and talk.

The response was swift and confusing. You changed
